Carencro Church No 2 by Protoguy Carencro Church No 2 by Protoguy
The church in my mom's hometown in Carencro, Lousiana. Part of a series of four paintings based on the church. As a child visiting my grandparents, my cousins and I used to play in the cemetary beside the church.

One of the few oil paintings I've done.

Carencro Church No 2 by ~Protoguy is a painting with thickness and heft, and an almost plasticity as to how it mildly warps, as if from some mutant form of Louisiana heat. ( Featured by zeruch )

Is that St. Peter's? :D I think it used to be Lady of something, but I can't remember.

I believe so. As far as I know there's only one big church like that in Carencro. Big cemetery next to it.

How American Gothic. lovely and somehow foreboding place.

Thanks! The stormclouds that day really made it seem a brooding place. Add to that the fact that the cemetary is just to the right, it was a bit forboding, lol. Though I have to admit that it was one of me and my cousin's favorite places to play.

Thanks a lot! I was actually inspired by James Michalopoulis, a very cool New Orleans artist.

Nice. Coming from Louisiana myself, I think this picture somehow portays the feeling of being in here. In a good way. Anyone who has never been to Louisiana, I suggest you take a trip some time. It is like no place you have ever been, I promise.

I totallyagree. Louisiana is an amazing place and it's reputation in many ways doesn't do it justice. Most people either see rednecks or New Orleans and while both are definitely evident there, they are only a small part of the flavor of the place. I often wonder though, whether my feelings about the place are because I spent so much time there, and have roots there as opposed to the tourist who is traveling through. Is it possible to really know a place without having lived there?

Yeah, it's true. Most people don't get the feel for the real Louisiana, but I think the same can be said for just about anywhere.

Well I have lived in Louisiana all 17 years of my life thus far, so I really don't have much to compare it to. Still, it's a shame that mostly the only good things people associate with Louisiana are Mardi Gras and Bourbon Street...

My Ma Ma and Pa Pa (grandparents) live there, I've been past that church many times! I love the way you have captured the beauty of something that is frequently overlooked these days, even small towns like this have become so busy... but Carencro is indeed very peaceful compared to life in Houston. Don't you just love crawfish boils? (:

Sweet! Small world, eh! My Gramma and Poppop lived there and we visited them at least twice a year. Used to play in the cemetary next to the church. It's still got that great small town feel, though I haven't been back in at least 4 years. And yes! I love crawfish boils. My dad's parents, Mawmaw and Harold lived in Broussard and my uncle has one every year there.

My mom makes a really good crawfish etouffe. I think my favorite has always been chicken etouffe though. I got her recipe a long time ago and I love making it. I like the roux to be really dark.

What's your favorite Cajun dish? I'd have to say mine is my Ma Ma's crawfish etouffe. We usually have our boil around Easter.

Why has this gotten so little attention? This is fucking amazing, it's so realsitic but so fantastic at the same time. Wow, I really really really like this for reasons that I just can't find words for.

very realistic as well as surreal! I love to see more historical paintings, especially one with such a cool twist as this. ^^ I'm from Louisiana and this actually looks a lot like the church I go to in Baton Rouge..

But yeah, I love the movement not only in the church building but also in the strokes of your painting! VERY lovely. :3

It does, but not so much the church itself, as I didn't attend services there much. In fact, the last time I was inthe building was for my grandfather's funeral. But I do have a lot of great memories from Carencro.

You're welcome my dear.
I truely enjoyed your church.
I bet it makes you feel good inside when you think of it.
Especially when it brings back special childhood memories.
